Diaoyu Islands -- Japan's provocative action defies post-war order

The normally subdued language of the Chinese has taken a far more assertive tone regarding Japan's "impudent" actions lately.

BEIJING, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- Japan's position on the issue of the Diaoyu Islands blatantly challenges the international order established after World War II and reveals Tokyo's continuous denial of history.

Japan went back on its words by arbitrarily staging the "islands-purchasing" farce. Its position on the issue is an outright denial of the outcomes of the victory of the World Anti-Fascist War and constitutes a grave challenge to the post-war international order, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Monday.

Japan's clamoring for the "purchase" of the islands is a sign of its historical amnesia.

After Japan's defeat in World War II and its unconditional surrender under the terms of Potsdam Proclamation, Tokyo were obliged to return all territories it had seized illegally, including the Diaoyu Islands, to its rightful owner.

However, showing little repentance on its war crimes, the Japanese government has gone so far as to "nationalize" territories that belong to another country under the brazen allegation of managing the islands in a "calm and stable" manner and helping preserve regional stability.

Japan apparently adopted a bandit's logic in its futile efforts to whitewash its hypocritical image tarnished by its occupation of Chinese territory. Its arbitrary behaviors are absolutely impudent and unacceptable, and should be condemned and countered immediately.

The Japanese government's "islands-purchasing" scheme, whether emboldened by Washington or aimed at seeking political gains, does not change, not in the slightest way, the historical fact that Japan occupies Chinese territory, nor does it alter China's territorial sovereignty over the Diaoyu Islands.

The Diaoyu Islands are an inalienable part of China's territory, and the so-called "purchase" of the Diaoyu Islands is totally illegal and invalid. "The Chinese government and its people will absolutely make no concession on issues concerning its sovereignty and territorial integrity," Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said on Monday.

China, a nation characterized by its firm and unyielding will even under extreme hardships, is able to safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity, Wen added.

The Japanese government is playing with fire on the issue even at the cost of the hard-won Sino-Japanese relations, which were restored to normalcy 40 years ago with bitter memories of World War II.

It is highly advisable that Tokyo proceed from the overall interests of the Sino-Japanese relations, which is contributive not only to the two countries, but also to regional peace and stability.

Should Tokyo remain self-willed over the issue and ignore Beijing's solemn protests and grave warnings, it would have to bear full responsibility for whatever repercussions may arise.
