O, how they tried
with tenderness and subtlety
at first
then psychological intimidation
then coercion and physical torture

after decades of relentless onslaughts
did they succeed in altering
one iota of being, thought or tendency,
did they break this spirit?
not on your life
as mine is too precious to compromise
